URMIL DALAL
Creative Director of Suvarn Studio
Est. 1999I fell in love with connection. Hearing people’s stories, perspectives –– expressing emotions. I love it. And photography connects it all together for me.
I was 8 when my mom handed me a camera at a wedding. I carried canisters of film in my pockets and adjusted lighting at my father’s direction. I photographed weddings with my parents on the weekends then headed to the local photo lab to develop film on the weekdays, after school of course. I have memories of my mom patiently teaching me how to place 5x7 prints in plastic sleeves in the type of albums many of us have sitting in our homes.
These moments inevitably shift to memories––and when words are no longer able to be spoken, it is only because of a photographer that there will be a photo to tell the story instead.
My journey started with intimate weddings in Northern New Jersey, which expanded to lavish ceremonies on the lakesides of Switzerland and Italy to the iconic venues of New York City. I’m fortunate to have worked alongside the industry’s most recognized planners, photographers, and vendors. All of whom have had a significant influence on my work and life. Most importantly, I’ve been blessed with amazing clients who have naturally become an extension of family.
25 years ago my father founded Suvarn Studio, named after my grandmother. His core values right at the front of it, family and tradition.
Traditional––the core style and value of our studio. It represents the simple portraits and moments that hold the greatest value, the photos you may describe as timeless, influenced by documentary and editorial imagery.
It's when connection inspires emotion that my love for storytelling comes alive –– to create photos and films that will be mused on by future generations, hopefully in the same way I reflect on my own parents' wedding photos.
Now I’ll let the photographs tell you the rest of the story.
